In computing, specifically computer storage, a Redundant Array of Independent Drives (or Disks), also known as Redundant Array of Inexpensive Drives (or Disks), (RAID) is an umbrella term for data storage schemes that divide and/or replicate data among multiple hard drives. RAID can be designed to provide increased data reliability and/or increased I/O performance.

A number of standard schemes have evolved which are referred to as levels. There were five RAID levels originally conceived, but many more variations have evolved, notably several nested levels and many non-standard levels (mostly proprietary).

What is TFTP?

Tftpd is a server which supports the Internet Trivial File Transfer Protocol (RFC 783). The TFTP server operates at the port indicated in the `tftp' service description and the server is normally started by inetd or the latest xinetd.

The trivial file transfer protocol (TFTP) is a UDP-based file transfer program that is frequently used to allow diskless hosts to boot over the network. TFTP is implemented by the tftp client program and the tftpd server program. Because TFTP has no user authentication, it may be possible for unwanted file transfer to occur. It is a significant threat that tftp may be used to steal password files.

What is Nagios?

Nagios® is a system and network monitoring application. It watches hosts and services that you specify, alerting you when things go bad and when they get better. Nagios was originally designed to run under Linux, although it should work under most other unices as well.

Some of the many features of Nagios® include:

• Monitoring of network services (SMTP, POP3, HTTP, NNTP, PING, etc.).
• Monitoring of host resources (processor load, disk usage, etc.).
• Simple plugin design that allows users to easily develop their own service checks.
• Parallelized service checks.
• Ability to define network host hierarchy using "parent" hosts, allowing detection of and distinction between hosts that are down and those that are unreachable.
• Contact notifications when service or host problems occur and get resolved (via email, pager, or user-defined method).
  

Introduction
